Arm cuffs may help thin blood at high altitudes

NCT ID NCT07562464

First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tests whether a simple, non-invasive treatment called remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) can help manage high-altitude polycythemia, a condition where the body makes too many red blood cells at high altitudes. About 222 adults living above 8,200 feet for over 6 months will receive either standard medication alone or medication plus daily RIC sessions for 90 days. The goal is to see if RIC reduces hemoglobin and hematocrit levels better than medication alone.
