First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jul 10, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This pilot study is testing whether Reiki, a gentle energy-based therapy, can reduce pain and the need for painkillers after lumbar spinal fusion surgery. Sixty adults undergoing the procedure will receive either real Reiki or a sham session before and after surgery. The main goal is to see if Reiki improves pain scores and quality of life during recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Reiki (energy-based therapy)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a non-drug option to help manage pain after spinal surgery and reduce reliance on painkillers.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early pilot study (60 people) with no blinding, so results may not be reliable or generalizable. Reiki's effects are hard to separate from placebo.
