Robot vs surgeon: can a machine better mend nerves?
NCT ID NCT07084207
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a robotic surgical system called Symani can safely and effectively repair damaged nerves in the hand. One hundred adults with a finger nerve injury will be randomly assigned to receive either robotic-assisted or traditional manual surgery. The main goal is to see how well sensation returns six months after the procedure, and to check for any serious problems during surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Symani® Surgical System (robotic-assisted surgery device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that robotic-assisted microsurgery is a safe and effective option for repairing hand nerve injuries, potentially improving recovery of sensation.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage study (100 participants) comparing a new robotic device to standard manual surgery. The device may not improve outcomes over manual techniques, and there are always surgical risks like infection or nerve damage.
