Summary

This study tested whether training traditional birth attendants (village midwives) to provide basic mental health support could reduce depression in pregnant women in rural Kenya. 220 pregnant women with depression were enrolled. The approach used simple, proven counseling techniques. The goal was to lower depressive symptoms and improve well-being for mothers and their babies.
