NCT ID NCT04922307
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests special blood-sparing techniques during surgery for advanced kidney cancer. The goal is to reduce the number of donor blood transfusions patients need. About 240 adults with large kidney tumors will be randomly assigned to receive either the blood-sparing protocol or standard care. Researchers will also track complications and long-term outcomes like cancer recurrence.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Blood-sparing techniques (acute normovolemic hemodilution, cell saver, veno-venous bypass)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could reduce complications and improve recovery for patients undergoing surgery for advanced kidney cancer.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, single-center study, and the techniques may not significantly reduce transfusions or improve outcomes in all patients.
