First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether trained peer specialists can help homeless veterans reduce their use of emergency rooms and hospital stays. Over 24 weeks, 177 veterans will receive 18 coaching sessions focused on whole health. The goal is to see if this support lowers acute care use and improves mental and physical health.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Peer Support-Whole Health Coaching
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that peer coaching helps homeless veterans rely less on emergency rooms and hospitals, improving their health and lowering costs.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small study (177 people) and results may not apply to all homeless veterans. The coaching requires 18 sessions over 24 weeks, so some may drop out.
