First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a 10-session online program called REDCHiP for parents of young children (up to age 8) with type 1 diabetes. The program uses cognitive behavioral therapy to help parents manage their fear of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and reduce diabetes-related distress. About 44 parents will be randomly assigned to either the program or usual care. Researchers will measure changes in parents' fear, distress, and coping, as well as children's blood sugar levels.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

REDCHiP (a behavioral telehealth program based on cognitive behavioral therapy)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could give parents practical coping skills to reduce fear and distress, improving their quality of life and possibly their child's glucose control.

What could go wrong

This is a small feasibility study (44 participants) in Portugal, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is behavioral, not a medical treatment, and may not produce lasting changes.
