New combo therapy aims to shrink rectal tumors, spare patients from colostomy bags

NCT ID NCT06493240

Summary

This study tested a three-part treatment for rectal cancer that has not spread. Patients first received radiation with a chemotherapy pill, followed by an immunotherapy drug. The goal was to shrink the tumor completely before surgery, potentially allowing surgeons to preserve the anal sphincter and avoid a permanent colostomy bag.
