Balloon 'Postconditioning' may shield brain after stroke

NCT ID NCT06526429

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested a procedure called rapid local ischemic postconditioning in 25 people who had a stroke and successful clot removal. Right after reopening the blocked artery, doctors briefly inflated and deflated a balloon in the neck to temporarily stop blood flow, aiming to help the brain adapt. The main goal was to check safety and find the best dose for future studies.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

rapid local ischemic postconditioning (balloon inflation/deflation procedure)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple procedure to reduce brain damage after stroke clot removal.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small safety study with only 25 participants. The procedure may cause complications like vessel spasm or embolism, and it is not yet known if it improves outcomes.
