New combo therapy may beat chemo for rare kidney cancer
NCT ID NCT06120374
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether a combination of radiation and immunotherapy works better than standard chemotherapy after surgery for a rare type of kidney cancer called upper tract urothelial carcinoma. About 178 patients with high-risk features will be followed to see which treatment helps prevent the cancer from coming back. The goal is to find a more effective way to keep patients cancer-free.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Radiotherapy (SBRT) and immunotherapy
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that combining radiation and immunotherapy is a better option than standard chemotherapy for preventing cancer recurrence after surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a randomized trial, so results may be less reliable. The combination therapy may also cause more side effects, and it is unclear which patients benefit most.
