Radiation for breast cancer may quietly harm your thyroid

NCT ID NCT04528225

Summary

This study aimed to understand how often breast cancer patients develop an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) after receiving radiation therapy following surgery. Researchers followed 729 patients, checking their thyroid hormone levels before and after treatment to see if the radiation dose to the thyroid gland was linked to the problem. The goal was to identify risk factors to help guide future treatment and protect patients' thyroid health.
