Could zapping the spleen fix Chemo's side effect?
NCT ID NCT07575854
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tests a new use of targeted radiation (SIRT) to the spleen in 18 adults with gastrointestinal cancer who have low platelets and an enlarged spleen from chemotherapy. The goal is to see if the procedure is safe and can raise platelet counts, helping patients stay on their cancer treatment. The study will also find the highest safe radiation dose.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Yttrium-90 glass microspheres (TheraSphere) delivered via radiation procedure
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new way to manage chemotherapy-induced low platelets, allowing patients to continue cancer treatment without delays.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small pilot study with only 18 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The radiation procedure carries risks like bleeding, infection, or damage to nearby organs.
