New wrist surgery could make dialysis easier for kidney patients

NCT ID NCT02728817

First seen Dec 16, 2025 · Last updated Jun 13, 2026 · Updated 32 times

Summary

This study compares a new surgical method, called RADAR, to the standard approach for creating a blood vessel connection (fistula) used for dialysis in people with end-stage kidney disease. The new technique involves moving the radial artery to attach it to a nearby vein with less cutting, which may reduce scarring and improve how well the fistula works. About 200 adults who need their first dialysis access are taking part to see if the RADAR method leads to better long-term blood flow and fewer complications.
