Pulse oximeters may miss low oxygen in darker skin – new study aims to fix that

NCT ID NCT06575270

First seen Feb 13, 2026 · Last updated Jun 12, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study checks how well pulse oximeters (the clip-on finger sensors that measure oxygen levels) work in children with congenital heart disease, especially those with darker skin. Researchers will measure actual skin pigment using a special device and compare it to the oximeter readings. The goal is to find out if skin tone affects accuracy, so that future devices can be more reliable for everyone.
