First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a combination of motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy (MI-CBT) to help homeless-experienced veterans engage in work, school, or training. 106 veterans who are already housed through VA programs will be randomly assigned to receive either MI-CBT or a healthy lifestyle education program for 24 weeks. The goal is to see if the new counseling approach increases motivation and productive activities.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (MI-CBT)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a new, evidence-based counseling approach to help homeless veterans re-enter the workforce or school.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study (106 participants) testing a behavioral intervention, so results may not generalize widely. The intervention is not a medical treatment and may not work for everyone.
