First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase II trial tests whether low-dose psilocybin, a compound from magic mushrooms, combined with psychotherapy is safe and effective for easing chronic pain in cancer patients who already take opioids. Twenty adults with active cancer and moderate to severe pain will receive psilocybin and talk therapy. The study focuses on safety and pain reduction, aiming to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of pain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

psilocybin (a compound from magic mushrooms)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new way to manage chronic cancer pain, potentially reducing reliance on opioids.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 20 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Psilocybin can cause hallucinations and other side effects, and safety is still being evaluated.
