Can a Blood-Derived gel help you smell again?

NCT ID NCT07151703

First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a person's own platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can improve smell when placed in the nose on a gel sponge versus being injected. Sixty adults with smell loss lasting over three months will receive one treatment and then do smell training for three months. Researchers will compare smell test scores and comfort between the two methods.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, office-based treatment to help restore smell in people with persistent loss of smell.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 participants. PRP is not a proven treatment for smell loss, and the benefit may be modest or no better than current care.
