New study aims to cut unnecessary antibiotics in newborns

NCT ID NCT06845332

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study will roll out three proven antibiotic stewardship strategies in Dutch hospitals to see if they reduce unnecessary antibiotic use in newborns with suspected early-onset sepsis. Researchers will compare data from before and after the strategies are put in place, involving up to 55,000 babies born at 34 weeks or later. The goal is to make care more consistent and safer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

antibiotic stewardship strategies (EOS calculator, procalcitonin-guided therapy, IV-to-oral switch)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help standardize safe antibiotic use in newborns, reducing unnecessary treatment and hospital stays.

What could go wrong

This is an implementation study, not a test of new drugs. Results may vary across hospitals, and the strategies may not reduce antibiotic use as expected.
