Face-Down breathing: simple position change may keep COVID patients off ventilators
NCT ID NCT04358939
First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 20 times
Summary
This study tested whether having COVID-19 patients with serious breathing problems lie face down (prone position) while receiving high-flow oxygen could reduce the need for breathing tubes and intensive care. Researchers enrolled 405 adults with COVID-19 pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The goal was to see if this simple position change improves oxygen levels and lowers the risk of death or needing a ventilator.
