Stem cell infusion shows promise for Hard-to-Treat GVHD
NCT ID NCT00284986
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 2 study tested a stem cell product called Prochymal in 11 patients with severe graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) that did not improve with standard treatments. The goal was to see if the infusion could reduce or resolve GVHD symptoms by day 28. The study measured complete or partial response and tracked side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Prochymal (adult human mesenchymal stem cells)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for patients with severe graft-versus-host disease that hasn't responded to other therapies.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase study with only 11 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment may not work or could cause side effects.
