Could probiotics be a breath of fresh air for COPD?
NCT ID NCT07339280
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether taking probiotic capsules daily for 16 weeks can reduce shortness of breath and improve lung function in people with COPD. Sixty adults with stable COPD will receive either the probiotic or a placebo. Researchers will measure changes in breathing, symptoms, and inflammation to see if probiotics offer any benefit.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
probiotic supplement (Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces boulardii)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, safe way to help people with COPD breathe easier and feel better day-to-day.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 people. Probiotics may not improve COPD symptoms, and results might not apply to everyone with the disease.
