Blood clot trick may cut wisdom tooth pain

NCT ID NCT07604584

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a substance made from a patient's own blood, called platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), could reduce pain, swelling, and jaw stiffness after impacted wisdom tooth surgery. Thirty smokers and nonsmokers each had one tooth socket treated with PRF and the other left as a control. Researchers measured pain, swelling, and mouth opening during the first week after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, natural way to reduce pain and speed recovery after wisdom tooth surgery, especially for smokers.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 30 people. Results may not apply to everyone, and PRF may not work better than standard care.
