Simple cold pack or massage may prevent Post-Surgery bladder issues

NCT ID NCT07293000

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests two simple nursing methods—a cold pack on the lower belly or a gentle massage on the lower back—to prevent urinary retention after spinal anesthesia. About 105 adults having groin, pelvic, or leg surgery will be randomly assigned to one of these methods or usual care. The goal is to see if these non-invasive techniques reduce the need for a urinary catheter.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cold pack and sacral massage

What this could lead to

If effective, these simple nursing methods could offer a drug-free way to prevent urinary retention after spinal anesthesia, reducing the need for catheters.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 105 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The interventions may not work better than usual care.
