Bladder wash could cut infections and hospital visits for catheter users

NCT ID NCT06163469

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a bladder wash with a low-dose antiseptic (chlorhexidine) during routine catheter changes can reduce urinary tract infections and unplanned healthcare visits. Seventy adults with a long-term suprapubic catheter and a history of UTIs will receive the wash every three months for nine months. The goal is to see if the procedure is comfortable and practical in an outpatient setting.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

chlorhexidine gluconate bladder instillation

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, in-office procedure to reduce urinary tract infections and unplanned hospital visits for people with neurogenic bladder.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study with only 70 participants. The treatment may not reduce infections or may cause discomfort. Results may not apply to all patients.
