Simple steps may slash infection risk in kids' hernia surgery
NCT ID NCT07346742
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether giving an antibiotic before surgery or using stitches coated with an antimicrobial agent can prevent wound infections in children having open groin surgery for hernias or hydroceles. About 174 children will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: antibiotic injection, antimicrobial stitches, or a placebo. Their wounds will be checked for infection at 5, 13, and 30 days after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Intravenous cefuroxime and antimicrobial-coated sutures
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to prevent infections after common childhood groin surgeries.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial (174 children) and results may not apply to all hospitals or patient groups. Infections are already rare, so showing a clear benefit may be difficult.
