One pill during labor could shield babies from dangerous infections

NCT ID NCT03925480

Summary

This large study tested whether giving a single dose of the antibiotic azithromycin to mothers during labor could prevent skin and other infections in their babies during the first year of life. Over 2,100 mother-baby pairs in Fiji participated, with half receiving the antibiotic and half receiving a placebo. Researchers tracked infections, antibiotic use, and safety in both mothers and infants for a full year after birth.
