Mesh may stop hernias after belly surgery, study shows promise

NCT ID NCT03912662

First seen Dec 12, 2025 · Last updated Apr 24, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study looked at whether a special mesh placed during abdominal surgery could prevent incisional hernias, which happen in up to 50% of patients. It involved 32 adults having planned midline belly surgery. The mesh was used to reinforce the surgical closure, and patients were followed for 2 years to check for hernias and side effects. The study was stopped early, but the data collected helps understand how well the mesh works.
