New study tests earlier treatment for low blood sugar in type 1 diabetes
NCT ID NCT04876079
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at whether giving oral glucose at a slightly higher blood sugar threshold can prevent mild-to-moderate hypoglycemia in people with type 1 diabetes. Thirty adults with type 1 diabetes were given 16g of oral carbohydrates when their blood glucose reached a target level. The goal was to see if this proactive approach reduces time spent with low blood sugar compared to current guidelines.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance

What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to simpler, more effective guidelines for preventing mild low blood sugar episodes in people with type 1 diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study with only 30 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and the approach might not work better than current guidelines.
