New nerve surgery could stop phantom limb pain before it starts

NCT ID NCT06719245

Summary

This study tests whether a specific nerve surgery technique performed during leg amputation can prevent the severe chronic pain that often follows. Researchers are comparing the standard method of cutting nerves to a newer technique called targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), which reroutes nerves to prevent painful nerve endings. About 200 adults scheduled for leg amputation due to vascular disease will be randomly assigned to receive one of the two techniques and will report their pain levels for one year afterward.
