First seen Feb 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 21 times
Summary
This study tested whether a special suction bandage called Prevena can prevent wound complications after groin surgery in high-risk patients. The bandage is placed over the closed incision in the operating room and applies gentle suction for 5-7 days. Researchers compared it to standard dry gauze dressings in 140 patients undergoing vascular surgery through a groin incision.

Active substance
Prevena closed incision negative pressure device
What this could lead to
If it works, this could give surgeons a simple way to prevent wound infections and other complications after groin surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study. The device may not reduce complications enough to be worth the extra cost or hassle.
