Can a simple splint boost leg recovery after a stroke?
NCT ID NCT06965894
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether wearing a pressure splint on the leg during rehab exercises helps stroke patients with one-sided weakness (hemiplegia) improve leg movement, balance, and strength. Thirty participants were split into two groups: one did exercises with the splint, the other without. Both groups received standard neurodevelopmental therapy for six weeks. The goal was to see if the splint adds extra benefit to recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Johnston pressure splint (device)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost tool to help stroke survivors regain leg movement and balance during rehab.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 30 participants. Results may not apply to all stroke patients, and the splint may not provide significant benefit over standard therapy.
