Could a simple iodine solution make thyroid surgery safer?
NCT ID NCT04856488
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether giving Lugol's solution before removing the thyroid gland can lower the chance of two common surgery complications: low calcium levels from damaged parathyroid glands and vocal cord weakness from nerve injury. About 182 adults with overactive thyroid from Graves' disease or toxic nodular goiter will take part. The goal is to make surgery safer and reduce the need for long-term calcium or vitamin D supplements.
