Heart-Lung machine at the scene: could it save more cardiac arrest victims?
NCT ID NCT07041086
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether using a heart-lung machine (ECMO) right at the scene of a cardiac arrest can improve survival and brain function. Researchers will compare how quickly ECMO can be started on-site versus in the hospital. The trial involves 100 adults who have a witnessed cardiac arrest and receive bystander CPR.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) - a machine that pumps blood outside the body to add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that starting ECMO at the scene of a cardiac arrest saves more lives and reduces brain damage compared to standard CPR alone.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage feasibility study, not a large definitive trial. ECMO is complex and risky, and results may not apply to all patients or settings.
