Breath test may predict anesthesia danger in seniors

NCT ID NCT07166562

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This observational study will test whether a breathing exercise before anesthesia can predict low blood pressure in 86 elderly patients (65+). Researchers will measure pulse pressure variation during forced inhalation and see if it matches later drops in blood pressure. The goal is to find a simple, early warning sign to prevent complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could give doctors a simple, non-invasive way to predict and prevent dangerous drops in blood pressure during anesthesia in older patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early observational study, not a treatment trial. The breathing test may not reliably predict hypotension in all patients, and results may not apply to broader populations.
