15-Second breath test may guide fluid treatment for sick infants

NCT ID NCT04932590

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 14, 2026 · Updated 38 times

Summary

This study looked at whether a 15-second pause in breathing (called an end-expiratory occlusion test) can predict if giving fluids will help infants under 2 years old who are in shock and on a breathing machine. Ten infants in intensive care were included. The goal was to see if changes in heart blood flow during the pause could tell doctors which babies would benefit from more fluids. The study is complete, but results are not yet reported.
