New prostate surgery aims to save sexual function without sacrificing cancer control

NCT ID NCT07348367

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two types of prostate cancer surgery: radical prostatectomy, which removes the entire prostate and surrounding tissue, and precision prostatectomy, which removes most of the prostate but spares nerves and structures important for urinary control and sexual function. Researchers want to see if precision surgery leads to better recovery of erections and continence while still being as effective at controlling cancer. The trial will enroll 160 men with low- or intermediate-risk prostate cancer and follow them for 12 months after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

surgery (precision prostatectomy vs radical prostatectomy)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer men with prostate cancer a surgical option that preserves sexual and urinary function without compromising cancer control.

What could go wrong

This is an early randomized trial with only 160 participants, and it is not yet proven that precision prostatectomy is as effective as radical prostatectomy at preventing cancer recurrence.
