New pain plan could cut opioid use in Kids' spine surgery

NCT ID NCT06626503

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a methadone-based pain control plan helps children aged 10-17 recover better after spine fusion for scoliosis. About 500 teens will be randomly assigned to receive either methadone or standard opioids during and after surgery. The goal is to see if methadone reduces pain and the need for other opioids, while also tracking side effects like breathing problems.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Methadone

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a safer, more effective pain management approach for children undergoing major spine surgery, reducing opioid use and side effects.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 3 trial, but results may not apply to all hospitals or patients. Methadone carries risks like respiratory depression, and the benefit over standard care may be modest.
