Mind over knee: pre-surgery therapy may boost ACL recovery

NCT ID NCT07423767

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a short cognitive-behavioral program before anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction can reduce fear of movement and improve physical function. 44 patients aged 18-45 will be randomly assigned to either the psychological intervention or standard care. The program includes one in-person session and weekly phone support for 3-4 weeks, focusing on normal movement without crutches.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cognitive-behavioral intervention

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to improve recovery and reduce fear of re-injury after ACL surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 44 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The intervention is psychological, so benefits may vary.
