New model aims to cure hepatitis c in homeless drug users

NCT ID NCT07667101

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a collaborative care model where pharmacists, doctors, and patient navigators work together to provide hepatitis C treatment to people who use drugs and live in supportive housing. 444 participants will be randomly assigned to either this model or usual care. The goal is to see if this approach increases the number of people who get evaluated and cured of hepatitis C.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for hepatitis C, plus PrEP for HIV and naloxone for overdose prevention, delivered through a pharmacist-led collaborative care model
What this could lead to
If successful, this model could cure hepatitis C in a hard-to-reach population, reducing liver disease and preventing spread of the virus.
What could go wrong
This is an implementation study, not a drug trial. Success depends on engagement and follow-up, which can be challenging in this population. The cure rate may be lower than in controlled settings.
