New swallowing procedure tested against standard treatment
NCT ID NCT01793922
First seen Apr 09, 2026 · Last updated Apr 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compared two different procedures for treating achalasia, a condition that makes swallowing difficult. Researchers tested whether a newer procedure called POEM works better long-term than the standard pneumatic dilation treatment. The trial involved 132 adults with achalasia who hadn't had previous treatments, following them for years to see which approach provided longer-lasting symptom relief.
