New 'Scarless' surgery tested for swallowing disorder

NCT ID NCT01512719

Summary

This study tested a new, less invasive procedure called POEM for people with achalasia, a condition that makes swallowing difficult. Doctors performed the procedure on 100 patients who were candidates for traditional surgery. The goal was to see if cutting the tight muscle in the esophagus through a small internal tunnel could successfully resolve swallowing problems.
