Could kidney patients eat more fruits and veggies safely?
NCT ID NCT07494266
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This pilot study will test whether a healthy plant-based diet without strict potassium limits is safe for people with advanced chronic kidney disease (stages 4-5). Thirty participants will be assigned to either a liberal plant-based diet or a traditional potassium-restricted diet for six months. The main goal is to see if the liberal diet leads to dangerous high potassium levels. If safe, it could improve quality of life and lead to larger studies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- healthy plant-based diet (liberal potassium intake)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that a more varied plant-based diet is safe for kidney patients, potentially improving quality of life and paving the way for larger studies.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study (30 people) that hasn't started yet. It only tests safety over 6 months, so long-term benefits or risks are unknown. The liberal diet might still cause dangerous potassium spikes in some patients.
