New MRI method maps healthy placental blood flow

NCT ID NCT01092949

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study used MRI scans to measure blood flow in the placenta of 135 women undergoing pregnancy termination for fetal reasons between 16 and 32 weeks. The goal was to create a set of normal reference ranges for placental perfusion, which could help doctors identify when the placenta is not working properly. No treatments were tested; this was purely an observational study to gather baseline data.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors better understand and detect placental insufficiency, potentially improving monitoring of high-risk pregnancies.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with no treatment involved. It only establishes reference ranges and may not directly improve patient outcomes.
