New ultrasound technique could unlock secrets of placental health in pregnancy

NCT ID NCT06497959

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study uses a special contrast dye (SonoVue) during ultrasound to look at blood flow in the placenta of pregnant women with fetal growth restriction. The goal is to better understand how the placenta works when the baby is not growing well. Thirty women who have already decided to end their pregnancy for medical reasons will take part, and the results may help doctors learn more about placental problems.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
SonoVue (contrast agent for ultrasound)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to better understanding of placental blood flow problems in fetal growth restriction, potentially guiding future treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (30 participants) focused on understanding, not treatment. The contrast agent's safety in pregnancy is still being studied, and results may not apply to all cases.
