Tiny tablets could make PKU management easier for patients

NCT ID NCT07671859

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new microtablet protein substitute for people with phenylketonuria (PKU), a condition requiring a strict low-protein diet. The microtablets combine protein with vitamins and minerals, aiming to be easier to take than current liquid or powder options. About 20 adults and children (ages 4+) will try the tablets for 28 days, and researchers will check how well they tolerate and accept them.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

amino acid based microtablet protein substitute with vitamins and minerals

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a more convenient and acceptable way for people with PKU to manage their condition, potentially improving daily compliance.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early case series (20 people) lasting only 29 days, so results may not apply to everyone. It focuses on tolerance and acceptability, not long-term health outcomes.
