Pilates may offer a new path to jaw pain relief

NCT ID NCT07750145

First seen Aug 06, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether an 8-week Pilates program can reduce pain and improve jaw function in women with myogenic temporomandibular disorders (TMD), a common cause of jaw pain and stiffness. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a control group receiving standard education and home exercises, or an intervention group that also does supervised Pilates three times a week. Researchers will measure changes in pain sensitivity, jaw movement, posture, stress, and quality of life to see if Pilates adds meaningful benefit as a complementary therapy.

What this could lead to
If Pilates proves effective, it could offer a drug-free, complementary therapy to reduce jaw pain and improve quality of life in women with myogenic TMD.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The benefits of Pilates for TMD are not yet established, and individual responses may vary.
