Can a gentle electrical patch ease jaw pain faster?

NCT ID NCT07744893

First seen Aug 04, 2026 · Last updated Aug 05, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether adding transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to standard care—education, medication, and exercises—provides extra pain relief and better jaw function for people with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). About 48 adults with TMD will receive either standard care alone or standard care plus TENS. The study measures pain at rest and during jaw movement, as well as quality of life, over the short and medium term.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) added to standard conservative therapy (education, medication, and exercises)
What this could lead to
If effective, adding TENS to standard care could offer faster and better pain relief and improved jaw function for people with temporomandibular disorders.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial, and the added benefit of TENS over standard care alone is uncertain. Results may not apply to all TMD patients.
