Picture this: a simple fix to prevent dangerous NICU mistakes

NCT ID NCT03960099

First seen Mar 25, 2026 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tests whether showing a simple pictograph (like a rainbow or lion) alongside a newborn's name in the electronic health record helps doctors and nurses avoid ordering treatments for the wrong baby. About 6,250 infants and their clinicians across three hospitals will take part. The goal is to see if pictographs reduce wrong-patient errors, which are a serious safety risk in intensive care for newborns.
