New hope for bedsores: physical therapy techniques tested in spinal cord injury patients

NCT ID NCT05458947

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether two physical therapy techniques—pulsed wound irrigation and electrical stimulation—can help heal pressure injuries (bedsores) in people with spinal cord injuries. Forty adults in rehab will receive one of three treatments: both techniques, irrigation alone, or stimulation alone. Researchers will track wound healing and quality of life over time.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

pulsed wound irrigation and electrical stimulation

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward better wound healing methods for people with spinal cord injuries, reducing complications and improving quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatments are procedures, not drugs, and may not work for all wound types.
