Gum disease breakthrough? new gel boosts standard cleaning

NCT ID NCT06731777

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a special oral gel called PHTALOX® could make standard deep-cleaning treatments for gum disease more effective. Forty-five adults with moderate to severe periodontitis received standard scaling and root planing, plus either the PHTALOX® gel, a chlorhexidine gel, or a placebo gel. The researchers measured gum pocket depth and attachment levels after 45 days to see if the new gel improved healing.

PHTALOX® (iron tetracarboxyphthalocyanine) oral gel

What this could lead to

If it works, this gel could become a simple, painless addition to standard dental cleanings to help control gum disease better.

What could go wrong
